first of all, i really like this piece. i like the angle and the way it sparkles and the way you can't really tell what it is. (to me, it looks like waves or ice, even though i know it's ceramics.) second of all, since i'm doing this as part of Helpful-Criticism, i have a few small suggestions: 1) i think this piece would benefit from additional colors and 2) i think it would be really cool if you experimented with the zoom, so that you would have one picture from farther away and one even closer, because it would be interesting to see varying degrees of detail. again, lovely photo!
Thank you so much for your thoughts. I can't tell you how hard it was to get an angle where there was minimal glare coming off of it. I took about 20 pictures before i got one that cropped out the background and wasn't too shine-y. It was a piece of student work from camp, so i don't have access to it anymore, but i'm experimenting with photographing some of my failed ceramics to see if they can be good photos...

you're welcome. i look forward to seeing some more ceramics photos. i think that's a really good use for pieces that didn't turn out quite the way you wanted them.
Thanks, the bubbles were actually a defect that we re-fired and corrected later. I think it improved the appearance of the plate but it made the surface a bit less interesting, abstractly. That angle helps produce a short focal length which gives the illusion of more depth. And it helps reduce glare in this case.
